A)
introduction:
The
Bally AS 2518-17, the AS 2518-35, the AS 2518-133, the Stern 100 and
Stern 200, as well as the Bally 6802 MPU (used in a few Fireball Classic
and some Cybernauts) have onboard jumpers marked with an "E".
Due to a limit of space I go without the "E"s on the following
tables. This jumpers are necessary to change to a certain prom configuration
in sockets U1 to U6, without wiring on the solder side and without the
need of cutting traces, in case you want to use other proms/eproms.
Below you can find a choice of jumper configurations for proms and eproms.
If you misplace a jumper for a certain configuration, your MPU won´t
boot again, so jumper with care!!
B)
Stern100 and Bally AS2518-17:
Stern100
and Bally AS 2518-17 MPUs are nearly identical and may be changed against
each other. If you do not know, which unit was placed in your game,
just take a look on the sockets U1-U6. If you have sockets at U1-U6
OR JUST at U2 and U6 this MPU is a Bally -17. Usually, these MPUs can
be used in early Bally and Stern-100 games (Bally until StrikesAndSpares),
however it isn´t a big deal to convert a -17 or Stern100 in a
-35, so that these units are running with 2716 or 2732 eproms in U2
and U6. They can indeed be placed in all games until 1985 (exept Stern-200
pinballs). This modification is explained in another document. See area
Flash Gordon!

Bally AS2518-35, AS 2518-133 and 6802 MPU:
The
Bally -35 und -133 MPU can be used in all games until 1985, exept Stern
200 pinballs. You can make them out, because they have only sockets
at U1, U2 and U6. There is one exeption left: The 6802 MPU, but this
one hasn´t a 5101 in U8 and a big crystal next to the 6802. The
jumper configuration for all 3 MPUs is the same. You can also use 2532
Eproms instead of 9332 Proms.

D)
Stern 200 MPU
The
Stern 200 MPU is able to control every Bally and Stern game until 1985.
If this MPU isn´t placed in a Stern200 game, always remove the
jumpers E32-E33 and E34-E35 as well as the 5101 in socket U13. If the
MPU is jumpered to 4x 2716 in sockets U1, U2, U5 and U6 you can also
place them in all Bally games using 3x 2716 eproms in U1, U2 and U6
without changing jumpers. If you convert a Stern 200 MPU to 2x 2732
in U2 and U6 this also requires no changes for all Bally games.
